What do electricians do?

Electricians work in residential, commercial, and industrial settings to install and repair electrical lines. This may include anything from a new chandelier in a custom-built home to an internal control system in a factory.

There are several paths to become an electrician. While you may be able to find an apprenticeship through your local electricians' union, it is more common to attend an electrical trade school, or an electrician certification program at a community college.

The United States Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reports that there will be an increased need of eight percent for electricians over the next ten years. This is higher than average when compared to other career fields. 

Is there a national exam for electricians?

After completing an electrical trade school or other electrician training courses, there is a national exam to pass. Each state has different requirements as to when the exam can be taken, ranging from immediately after graduating from an approved electrical training program, to after you have worked in the field for 10,000 hours. There are many study guides available for the exam as well as coaching services. Once an electrician has passed the exam, they can use the title Journeyman Electrician.

Are there other ways to advance your career as an electrician?

After working as a Journeyman Electrician for at least two years, you can take the Master Electrician exam. This would be the highest electrician certification available to you, but there are other ways to advance your career. 

An electrician can start their own business or even get project manager certification to transition into working in a corporate setting with an electrical background.

Can an electrician earn six figures?

While the BLS states that the median salary for electricians is $56,180. It is entirely possible to make much more than that depending on the metropolitan area, field of expertise, and specialization. In fact, the BLS also states that the top ten percent earn over $96,580.
